Go black to support contract doctors, Malaysians urged
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association has urged the public to go black on their social media accounts in support of contract doctors.
MMA president Dr Subramaniam Muniandy said that for almost five years, contract doctors have been fighting for clear career pathways to specialisation, detailed and transparent criteria for permanent posts, and equal treatment between contract and permanent staff.
However, despite multiple meetings, letters and statements, there are still no clear and firm answers from the government with regard to the future and welfare of Malaysia’s healthcare workers, he said.
“The contract doctors, many of whom are directly involved as frontliners in the fight against Covid-19, have been facing a long uncertainty about their future, and we call upon all Malaysians to support them,” he said.
From July 1 to 12, Subramaniam urged individuals or companies to change their personal profile pictures to black as a sign of support and solidarity for contract doctors under MMA’s Code Black protest initiative.
“People can also visit MMA’s Section for Housemen and Medical Officers (Schomos) Facebook page for the latest information and updates regarding contract doctors and help to share news,” he said.
Subramaniam added that on the final day, people are asked to go to work dressed in black and share pictures of themselves holding a placard saying ‘We stand with Contract Healthcare Workers’ with the hashtags #saveMYcontractHCW #BlackMondayMY #CodeBlackMY only.
He said the colour black was chosen to mourn the “bright young talents we have already lost to other countries” and to recognise the suffering of contract healthcare workers remaining in Malaysia.
“We need the people’s help and support. Please join us,” he said.
It was reported recently that a social media campaign known as #HartalDoktorKontrak, called for contract doctors to go on strike at the end of next month if the government failed to resolve the issue of their permanent placements.
MMA and Schomos said that although they do not condone a strike, they have reassured contract doctors they are currently working with the authorities to resolve their issues. FMT
