PETALING JAYA: The government has agreed to give a 50% toll discount on Friday and Saturday (Nov 6 and 7) in conjunction with the Deepavali celebrations, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 5) that the concession will run from midnight on Friday to 11.59pm on Saturday.

It will cover Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas nationwide, with Class 2 vehicles also enjoying the discount when crossing the Penang Bridge.

However, motorists using the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar toll plaza on the North-South Expressway and the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link will have to pay the normal rates.

Nanta said the government had allocated an estimated RM20.11mil to compensate highway concessionaires for the discounts, subject to verification of traffic figures.

The measure is intended to ease the financial burden on those travelling home or visiting relatives for the festival.

He also urged motorists to prepare for their journeys by checking their Touch ‘n Go card or e-wallet balances, obeying speed limits and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.

They are also advised to monitor traffic conditions and highway incidents through the relevant authorities’ official channels.

Nanta extended his Deepavali wishes to the Hindu community, expressing hope that the festival would continue to foster unity and harmony among Malaysians.
