Bersatu to unveil Melaka election line-up on Oct 29, same day as PN

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu will announce its line-up for the Melaka election on Oct 29, the same day Perikatan Nasional is scheduled to unveil its candidates, amid a dispute between the party and the coalition.

Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, however, did not say whether the party would contest the election on its own or enter into an electoral pact with other parties or coalitions, amid speculation of possible cooperation between Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan for the Nov 14 state election.

He also did not reveal the number of state seats Bersatu would contest.

“I don’t want to announce it. This will be announced on the 29th. Firstly, we are indeed participating,” he told reporters after the party’s Supreme Council meeting.

His remarks came after PH announced candidates for 21 of Melaka’s 28 state seats, leaving seven unfilled and raising questions about a possible electoral partnership with Bersatu.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu Supreme Council had agreed to contest the state polls, although several outstanding matters would need to be resolved within a day or two.

“There are a certain number of seats which we are looking into, but there are certain matters which we need to iron out,” he said.

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan on Sunday had said that the coalition will announce its Melaka candidates on Oct 29.

On the Sarawak election, Muhyiddin said Bersatu had yet to discuss its plans as there was still time.

“We haven’t discussed it yet because there is still time. After Melaka, we will think about what to do,” he said.
