PETALING JAYA: The leadership of Pakatan Harapan’s Melaka chapter did not agree to DAP pulling out of the Umno-led state government, says state PKR chief Adam Adli.
While PKR respected the stand taken by Melaka DAP, he said decisions that could threaten the state government’s stability should not be made hastily.

Adam said political stability was crucial to ensure Melaka’s development, economic growth and the people’s welfare.

“Melaka PKR agrees with PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim’s stand that differences in views should be resolved in a spirit of consensus through prudent negotiations, placing the people’s interests above all other considerations.

“The decision to withdraw from the state government was not jointly agreed to by the Melaka PH leadership.

“The door to discussions must remain open so that every decision can be reached in a mature and responsible manner in the interests of the people of Melaka,” he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Melaka DAP announced its withdrawal from the state government following the passage of a constitutional amendment allowing the appointment of up to seven unelected state assemblymen.

State DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong said the party’s two executive councillors, two deputy executive councillors and deputy speaker would resign from their posts, while all DAP assemblymen would now sit on the opposition benches.

Anwar had urged Melaka DAP to reconsider its decision or delay their resignations, saying the matter should first be negotiated between him, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Adam, the Hang Tuah Jaya MP, said the proposal for appointed assemblymen in Melaka should be evaluated based on the principles of responsibility, integrity and democracy.
