Police detain six Myanmar citizens over suspected poaching activities

KUALA KRAI: Six Myanmar citizens, including two women, suspected of involvement in illegal poaching activities were detained during a two-day operation at a durian plantation in Kampung Mia here.

Two babies were also taken into custody during the operation.

Kuala Krai police chief, Superintendent Mazlan Mamat, said the operation began at midnight on June 8 and ended at 6am on June 9.

“The items included six claws, 12 fangs, seven bones, six other wildlife body parts and a barrel containing meat believed to be from wild animals,” he said.

He said the anti-poaching operation, dubbed Op Bersepadu/Op Khazanah, was jointly carried out by the district police and the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) following a public tip-off.

The suspects and seized items have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action, he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, and the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Mazlan said the success of the operation was the result of close cooperation between the police and Perhilitan, as well as information provided by the public.
