Is new AG one of your own, MP asks Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP has asked law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said if newly appointed Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar is “one of your own”, in reference to a speech Azalina made two years ago.
At an Umno gathering in August 2022, Azalina took a dig at then prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for retaining Idrus Harun as AG, saying “whoever becomes prime minister usually appoints one of their own to become the AG”.
She also questioned if Dusuki was appointed as a reward of sorts for applying for Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in the Umno president’s Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.
Dusuki was most recently the head of the trial and appellate division at the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“The appointment of the new AG is being talked about out there. Is it because (he was involved in applying for Zahid’s DNAA) that he was appointed as AG, as some people are questioning?
“I can still remember what (Azalina) mentioned at the 2022 Umno gathering, that the prime minister should appoint ‘one of our own’ as the AG. Is this the result of that?” Mas Ermieyati said in the Dewan Rakyat while debating the Supply Bill 2025.
Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) interjected to warn Mas Ermieyati against imputing malicious perceptions by relying on “hearsay”.
On Monday, Dusuki was appointed as the new AG to replace Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh, who has been appointed as a Federal Court judge.

Dusuki, 57, has 31 years of legal experience and holds degrees in law from the International Islamic University Malaysia and the University of Wollongong, Australia.
During Dusuki’s time at the appellate and trial division, Zahid was granted a DNAA on all 47 charges of corruption, money laundering and criminal breach of trust after the prosecution applied for it.
In a statement later, Dusuki listed 11 reasons why Zahid was granted a DNAA.
