Six siblings face possible death penalty over drug trafficking charge

IPOH – Six brothers and a friend were charged at the Ipoh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday with trafficking more than 100 grams of drugs last week.

However, no plea was recorded from Muhammad Affandi Zulkafli, 41; Muhammad Khairul Azmil Zulkafli, 40; Shahrul Azwan Zulkafli, 38; Mohamad Shah Herman Zulkafli, 35; Muhamad Amirul Zulkafli, 29; and Mohamad Hafizi Zulkafli, 27, after the charges were read before Magistrate Norizan Ridzuan.

The charge against another accused, Mohd Ismail Borhan, 43, was read at the ward of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) on the same afternoon as he was receiving treatment there.

According to the charge, all seven unemployed men were accused of trafficking 118.87 grams of heroin.

The offence was allegedly committed at an unnumbered hut in Kampung Che Zainal Tambahan 1, Chemor, Ipoh, at about 9.20pm on July 21, 2026.

The charge was brought under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they face the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, they must be punished with at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Zariss Sofea Zainudin led the prosecution, while all the accused were unrepresented.

The court set Oct 22 as the next mention date for the case and the submission of the chemistry report.
