Minister says Nurul Izzah deserves recognition as ‘war general’

SHAH ALAM – Nurul Izzah Anwar deserves to be recognised again as a ‘war general,’ regardless of the outcome of her contest for the PKR Deputy President position in the 2025–2028 PKR Election.

Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek and Political Secretary, Atiqah Syairah Shaharuddin based this nomination on Nurul Izzah’s track record as the PKR Election Director during the 14th General Election (GE14), which saw the party win nearly 50 parliamentary seats, the highest number in PKR’s history.

“In facing GE16, we need all available internal talent to address the increasingly challenging polarisation narrative.

“Her experience in both urban and rural constituencies is a key asset to help Keadilan continue to win the hearts of the people and serve more efficiently,” they said in a statement on Monday.

This election sees Nurul Izzah challenging the incumbent Deputy President of PKR, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

According to Atiqah, during GE14, even while managing the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency and leading the campaign to free her father, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah still fulfilled her responsibilities as Election Director with full commitment.

“The main challenge then was managing a relatively new coalition that included Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Amanah, which had recently split from Umno and Pas.

“The situation was further complicated by the PKR Secretary-General’s resignation at the end of 2016, which disrupted the party’s administrative affairs,” she said.

She stated that PKR has experienced various phases of ups and downs throughout its nearly three decades in Malaysia.

“Although the party’s image was once associated with street struggles, that is no reason to disregard the requests of more than 150 branch leaders who won the grassroots election,” she added.

She added that the initiatives undertaken included the establishment of the Central Election Committee Academy and assigning roles to each Vice President to lead operational and negotiation groups in the field.

“I am confident and believe that Che Zam, Political Secretary in the Ministry of Economy, can confirm how Nurul Izzah played the role of the ‘war general’ in GE14,” she said.
