Hajiji Noor accused Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking and information chief Azis Jamman of allowing politics to cloud their judgment.

PETALING JAYA: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has accused Warisan of politicising the official birthday celebration of the state’s governor, after it was misreported as lasting for three months.

He said that social media postings made by Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking and information chief Azis Jamman were unnecessary as the institution of the Istana Negeri was apolitical.

Hajiji repeated the clarification that the celebration for governor Musa Aman’s official birthday would last a month, and not three as alleged.

“As chief minister, I am duty bound to protect and defend the institution of the Istana, irrespective of who is governor,” Hajiji said. He accused Darell and Azis of allowing politics to cloud their judgment, “not being able to make out the fundamental differences between government, politics and the Istana”.

Hajiji said: “The institution of the Istana is apolitical and should not be dragged into Warisan’s street politics of lies and deception.”

The chief minister said Musa had initially mooted the idea of not having any celebrations this year since the official birthday has been gazetted on March 30 and would clash with Hari Raya celebrations.

“However as chief minister, I felt that whatever decision to be made must be discussed at the state Cabinet”, which later decided that the celebration would be held in June, “in moderation” in line with Musa’s wishes, said Hajiji.

Hajiji added that Darell and Azis should be familiar with what the governor’s birthday celebrations would entail since Warisan had formed the state government in the past.

Yesterday, deputy chief minister Joachim Gunsalam said the official celebration of the Sabah governor’s birthday will only involve seven official events to be held in June, a reduction from the 12 events held in 2024, with a budget slashed by 30%.

Joachim had previously been quoted by The Star as saying a series of events would be held from March 30 to June 21. The report led to criticism from Darell and Azis, who said a three-month-long celebration was a waste of public funds.

However, Joachim later said four of the seven events would be held on June 21 while the remaining will be held before that within the same month.
