PETALING JAYA: The unity government should have clarified its stance on the issue of Najib Razak’s royal pardon application from the outset, says former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan.

Shahril said the current strategy of trying to appease both Najib’s supporters and the reform-oriented voter base, particularly through Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, was likely unsustainable.

“Because there are people who will support either position. They just need to be honest and transparent from the start about their stance,” he said in a recent episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast.

Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday that he had brought Najib’s royal pardon application to the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB), even though it was not initially on the meeting’s agenda.

Shahril said this marked a shift from the earlier narrative that decisions related to Najib’s pardon application were entirely under the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s jurisdiction.

On Feb 2, the FTPB announced that Najib’s prison sentence in his SRC International case had been halved from 12 years to six, and his fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Shahril added that Anwar might lose credibility among Pakatan Harapan supporters.

“The question of opposing (a full pardon), the question of forgiveness, or the question of house arrest, can no longer be discussed because you said you were the one who brought this matter up as an agenda.”

Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin meanwhile suggested that Anwar’s pivot in narrative was an attempt to placate Umno, especially after the call by Barisan Nasional leaders for Najib to be placed under house arrest, as per the alleged addendum issued by former king Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

“I see PMX’s (Anwar) claim that he brought Najib’s royal pardon application to the board, that he was the first to bring up the matter, as trying to soften Umno’s heart.”

However, Khairy also warned that such a balancing act could ultimately backfire.

“Trying to play both sides is difficult. It will eventually alienate everyone,” he said.
