PAS spiritual leader calls for negotiations on top PN post

PETALING JAYA: The spiritual adviser of PAS has called for negotiations to be held over the post of Perikatan Nasional chairman, and the one likely to be the coalition’s candidate for prime minister after the next general election.

Hashim Jasin said PAS was not clamouring for the key position but maintained that talks were necessary to evaluate the relevant aspects and to ensure all PN component parties jointly agreed on who should fill the post.

“The matter needs to be negotiated (by all PN component parties) rather than being decided by one party only. The negotiations have to be based on current realities and the strength of the respective component parties,” he told FMT.

“We can’t have one party saying that it should be so and so. That’s not right when we’re all part of a coalition,” said Hashim, a former assemblyman for Sanglang, Perlis.

Earlier today, Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan called for Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as PN’s candidate for prime minister when the next general election rolls around.

Wan Saiful dismissed the likelihood of a PAS leader leading PN’s charge at the next nationwide polls, saying Muhyiddin, a former prime minister, was PN’s best candidate for the top job.

However, Utusan Malaysia reported that Hashim disagreed, saying that PAS was more deserving of leading the opposition coalition since it has more MPs and a stronger grassroots network nationwide.

He also said PAS did not have a record of elected representatives party hopping, unlike Bersatu.

However, Gerakan president Dominic Lau backed Muhyiddin as PN’s prime minister candidate, citing his experience, commitment to collaboration, and support across the PN ranks.
