Khairy’s 100-day challenge, by Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA: Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s 100-day challenge is to ensure that Malaysia does not top 2.5 million Covid-19 cases and 30,000 deaths by Dec 7, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang says.

The total number of cases recorded to date is 2,277,565 and there have been 26,683 deaths.

In a statement this morning, Lim said Malaysia could be seeing light at the of the tunnel in the fight against the pandemic.

“Yesterday’s 9,066 daily new cases is the best in nearly three months since July 8 when Malaysia had 8,868 daily new cases,” the Iskandar Puteri MP said.

“We have had almost three months of five-digit daily new cases since July 13, and yesterday was the first time that we have dropped to four-digit numbers.

“It has taken us more than a month to drop from the peak of 24,599 daily new cases on Aug 25 to four-figure numbers.

“Will we need another month before we drop to three-figure numbers and will daily new cases drop to double-digit numbers when Khairy marks his 100 days as the health minister?

“This is Khairy’s 100-day challenge.”

Lim said all Malaysians hope and pray for the minister’s success in the war against the pandemic.

“We have had the longest Covid-19 wave in the world since the Sabah state election last September,” he said.

“When (former) prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin declared an emergency to fight the pandemic on Jan 11, 2021, there were a cumulative total of 138,224 Covid-19 cases and 555 deaths.

“When he resigned as prime minister seven months later on Aug 16, the cumulative total cases and deaths increased to 1,424,639 and 12,784, respectively.”

He said Malaysia was now ranked No. 20 among countries with the most cumulative number of cases compared to No. 89 on Aug 31.
