Civil servant remanded in halal logo bribery case

PETALING JAYA: A civil servant at a Selangor state agency has been remanded after he allegedly solicited and received about RM8,000 in bribes from a businessman whose company had used the halal logo on products that were not certified halal.
The alleged bribe is an inducement for the civil servant not to impose a compound on the company.
Magistrate Zur Azureen Zainalkefli allowed the suspect to be remanded for five days until Aug 25 following an application made by MACC at the Shah Alam magistrates’ court this morning, reported Berita Harian.
According to a source, the civil servant was arrested at around 2pm yesterday when he presented himself at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office to provide a statement.
Selangor MACC deputy director Khairul Izwan Karim confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
