Kedah govt plans to mandate Jawi script for billboards
PETALING JAYA: The Kedah government is planning to mandate the use of Jawi script after wordings in the Roman alphabet on all billboards and signs, according to local government and health exco Mansor Zakaria.
He said other languages would also be allowed as a third script on billboards, while the display of provocative images of women would be prohibited.
“Under the proposal, we will ban billboards from using images or visuals that feature prohibited content, incite hatred, or promote racism, as well as those displaying dangerous weapons,” he said, according to Harian Metro.
Mansor said the initiative was one of the state government’s efforts to uphold the Jawi script, in line with local by-laws encouraging its use.
“We already have by-laws promoting the use of Jawi script. This means all billboards should use Jawi as the second script,” he added.
