Umno, Pas tie-up a win-win for both parties, say analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional could gain more, both electorally and politically, by forging a partnership with Pas rather than by working with Pakatan Harapan, said political analysts.

Dr Lau Zhe Wei said BN would have better prospects of winning more seats and securing the top leadership position through cooperation with Pas.

“If BN were to work with Pas, the outcome would likely be better for them compared with working with PH.”

Lau was commenting on Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s remarks in his policy speech at the Umno General Assembly that BN could undergo an “evolution” if it forged a strategic partnership with another political force, particularly when “blue” meets “green”.

Without naming any party or political coalition, Zahid, who is also BN chairman, said such a development could occur when the two forces come together.

He pointed to developments in Johor and Negri Sembilan as indications of the current political dynamics.

He said a partnership with Pas could not only improve BN’s electoral prospects, but also give it greater political leverage to secure the country’s top leadership position.

“Working with Pas, not only can they (BN) win more seats, but Pas is also willing to give the highest leadership to BN.

“If BN were to work with PH, could they still pick the prime minister? Most likely not.”

He said one of the key issues that would need to be resolved in any BN-Pas cooperation was the leadership arrangement.

“One of the small issues arising is in Melaka, where the question is whether the arrangement should be led by Pas or BN.”

Lau said reaching a consensus in Melaka, as well as in Pahang and Perak, could help resolve potential differences and prevent similar issues from emerging at the federal level.

“I would say that if BN wants to find a partner, it would definitely be Pas rather than PH. BN would only choose to go on its own and contest independently if it cannot strike a deal with Pas.”

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Associate Professor Dr Mazlan Ali said cooperation between BN and Pas could be beneficial, as it would allow the parties to consolidate Malay votes rather than split them.

“The victory may appear easy, but for a general election, for example, it could still be quite difficult. Although they can combine their votes, can both parties divide the seats fairly?”

Mazlan said this was the main challenge facing the two parties.

“If they can reach a fair seat-sharing arrangement, then there would be no issue.”

He also said Zahid’s remarks reflected a stronger interest within Umno to cooperate with Pas, particularly as relations with PH appeared to be deteriorating.

He said this was evident following several issues, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigation into Tabung Haji and Felda, as well as controversies involving Zahid’s ministry.

“In previous statements, we saw that Umno did not seem particularly serious about Pas.

“But lately, it seems like they have become very close. It appears that Umno is now taking more initiative in moving forward with Pas.”
