Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had said the presence of PN leaders at the rally did not mean that the coalition had changed its stance on the 1MDB scandal.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has rubbished the notion that Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s absence from Monday’s rally for Najib Razak reflects a consistent anti-graft stance by the opposition coalition.

Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi also mocked PN over the conflicting statements by a handful of leaders concerning support for Najib, saying it showed that the coalition was in disarray.

“If Muhyiddin had kept to his ‘principles’, he should have objected to PAS holding the rally (in support of Najib). Besides being unable to control PAS, he was embarrassed to attend (the rally).

“That’s why PAS and Bersatu are in disarray. They are trying to manipulate the issue of (Najib’s house arrest) addendum for their political gain. There is no sincerity,” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, federal territories Bersatu secretary Mahathir Rais said the absence of Muhyiddin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang from the rally proved that PN still opposed corruption.

Mahathir, who said last week that the rally “reeked of political opportunism”, however said it was the individual right of other PN leaders to attend.

Among the PN leaders present on Monday were opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Wan Fayhsal had said the presence of PN leaders at the rally did not mean that the coalition had changed its stance on the 1MDB scandal.

The Machang MP said Bersatu would still demand accountability for the scandal, and that leaders were only at the rally to take Putrajaya to task for its “dishonesty” in managing Najib’s alleged addendum.

Puad however said Mahathir’s reasoning was “nonsense”, noting that Muhyiddin, the Bersatu president, was standing trial for corruption in connection with the Jana Wibawa programme.
