Firdaus Wong is suing Lim Guan Eng over defamatory remarks made about him in a video posted on Facebook on June 24.

GEORGE TOWN: Controversial preacher Firdaus Wong has filed a defamation suit against former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng at the High Court over the latter’s claims that he is an extremist.

In his suit, Wong claimed that Lim made defamatory remarks against him in a video posted on Facebook on June 24.

Wong alleged that Lim’s remarks, made in Mandarin, painted him as an “intolerant religious extremist” who would exploit religious issues to restrict the rights and freedoms of the non-Muslim community.

He further claimed that Lim’s remarks ridiculed him among the non-Muslim community.

“The defendant’s (Lim) statements were published with malice and intention to incite hatred against the plaintiff,” Wong said in his statement of claim.

He added that a letter of demand seeking an open apology was issued to Lim’s lawyers in July, but alleged that Lim had failed to abide by the request.

Wong seeks general, aggravated, exemplary damages against Lim as well as an injunction.

The court has set Oct 27 for case management.
