Rais Yatim expected to be charged in Melaka tomorrow

PETALING JAYA: Former Senate president Rais Yatim is expected to be charged at the Melaka sessions court tomorrow.

According to the e-Court system, the 84-year-old is scheduled to be charged before judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin at 9am.

When contacted, Rais confirmed the matter, saying the proceedings would take place at the Melaka court complex in Ayer Keroh.

The details of his charge remain unclear.

In July, the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, revoked the state honours bestowed on Rais, who is a former menteri besar.

State secretary Zafir Ibrahim had said the decision was made to preserve the honour of the Negeri Sembilan royal institution.

Rais, who is also a former Umno stalwart and current Wawasan chairman, lost the Seri Utama and Dato’ Setia Negeri Sembilan awards conferred in 2001 and 1979.

Rais played a central role in the ongoing Negeri Sembilan royal dispute, publicly backing the move by three undangs and one former undang to remove Tuanku Muhriz as the state’s ruler.

The former six-term Jelebu MP was among those present when Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Jaafar was allegedly proclaimed the new Yang Dipertuan Besar at a five-star hotel in Melaka in June.

The Negeri Sembilan palace declared the proclamation invalid in terms of the state’s constitution, laws and customs.
