‘Father of MRSM’ passes away at the age of 84

KUALA LUMPUR – The founder of Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM), Abdul Wahab Alwi, 84, passed away at 3am this morning.

The news of the passing of the man known as the “Father of MRSM” was shared by the MRSM Malaysia Alumni Association (ANSARA) via an Instagram post today.

ANSARA described the late statesman’s passing as the loss of a prominent figure and individual who helped create opportunities and build educational pathways for generation after generation of Malaysian children.

“From the vision he helped bring to life, MRSM has produced thousands of alumni who now serve in various fields — government, security, medicine, engineering, academics, business, professional sectors, and society.

“Perhaps not all of us have met or known the deceased. However, we are all among those who have passed through the doors of opportunity that he helped open,” according to the post.

ANSARA also informed that the funeral prayer for the deceased was held at 11am at the Masjid Raja Bendahara Tengku Bandar Shah, Denai Alam, Shah Alam, before the body was laid to rest at the Elmina Islamic Cemetery.

“May Allah SWT grant perseverance to the entire family of the deceased and accept all his deeds and charitable contributions to religion, race, and country,” according to the post.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, describing Abdul Wahab – a former director of the MARA Training Division – as a key individual behind the conceptualisation and establishment of MRSM.

“Indeed, the late statesman’s contributions and services in paving the way for education and building the future of the nation’s children will forever be etched in our memories. Al-Fatihah,” he said via a Facebook post. – BERNAMA
