Premature to announce poster boy for Sabah polls, says Zahid
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a ‘poster boy’ should only be named after an election is called, although he respects a suggestion that Sabah Umno chief Bung Mokhtar Radin fits the bill.

PETALING JAYA: It is premature to name a “poster boy” candidate for any state before a general or state election is officially called, says Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said he had provided guidelines for Sabah Umno to face the state election at a meeting with the Sabah Umno leadership yesterday.

“I think it’s best if the matter of selecting a menteri besar or chief minister is set aside for now. The focus should be on ensuring victory for the candidates fielded.

“I will personally consult with the Sabah Umno leadership to determine who is acceptable to the assemblymen and who can lead the state government once any party coalition secures the majority of seats in Sabah,” Bernama reported him as saying in Negeri Sembilan today.

Previously, Sabah Umno information chief Suhaimi Nasir said state chairman Bung Moktar Radin should be made BN’s poster boy for the upcoming Sabah election.

He said Bung, a former deputy chief minister, was most qualified for the role as he leads Umno and BN in Sabah.

“It has always been Sabah Umno’s tradition for the state BN chairman to be (our poster boy),” said Suhaimi in an interview with selected media.

While Zahid said he respected the suggestion, he felt the time had not yet come to put forward any individual or leader as the poster boy.
