PETALING JAYA: Sura assemblyman Tengku Fakhruddin Fauzi will be taking legal action against lawyer Zulqarnain Lukman over what he described as a serious and malicious accusation of insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

In a statement on Facebook, Tengku Fakhruddin said Zulqarnain’s remarks suggested that he was inciting the public to lose trust in the monarchy – an allegation which he said was “completely unfounded”.

The PAS man also criticised Zulqarnain for using the title of “constitutional expert” to make “baseless accusations” against him and create a false narrative.

“My original statement did not at all touch on, let alone insult, any ruler or royal institution,” said Tengku Fakhruddin.

“These accusations not only tarnish my reputation as an elected representative, but are also an attempt to create a defamatory and politically motivated negative perception of me.

“We all have a duty to uphold the institution of the Malay Rulers, but slandering fellow citizens under the guise of defending the monarchy is deeply irresponsible,” he added.

Zulqarnain alleged that the assemblyman had previously implied that the position of the Malay Rulers could be undermined by political power.

Claiming that the post could incite the public to lose trust in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers, Zulqarnain also called for legal action to be taken against Tengku Fakhruddin.
