The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of Ishsam Shahruddin on Feb 22. Ishsam won the seat in the last general election with a 2,213-vote majority in a five-cornered contest.
Based on data from the 2022 election, Ayer Kuning is a mixed constituency, with 55.64% Malay voters, 21.99% Chinese, 14.3% Indian, and 8.07% from other groups.
Tuan Ibrahim said the party decided to field Muhaimin, a local, as he checked all the boxes in a survey carried out among the constituents.
“He is a former PAS Youth leader in the area and has for the longest time served the people of Ayer Kuning.”
Separately, according to a PN Facebook post, Muhaimin has been the Tapah PN chairman and the PAS commissioner in the constituency since 2023.
Muhaimin, who studied in Syria, is also the headmaster of a tahfiz school in the constituency, a post he has held since 2015.
“He is not only a man of integrity, but also a candidate who is close to the rakyat,” the opposition coalition said in a statement.
