MACC said the cash and gold were recovered in raids conducted in an investigation into the use of a RM700 million fund for promotional and publicity purposes.

PETALING JAYA: About RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit have been seized in an investigation into four senior officers linked to a former prime minister, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said.

The cash and gold were recovered in raids conducted on the residences of the four officers and three other premises believed to be “safe houses”, MACC said.

The cash was in various international currencies such as baht, riyal, pound sterling, won, euro, Swiss franc and yuan, it said in a statement.

The agency also confiscated 16kg of pure gold bars with an estimated value of nearly RM7 million.

The raids followed the arrest last month of four officers linked to Malaysia’s ninth prime minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in an investigation into a RM700 million fund allegedly for promotional and publicity purposes to showcase the achievements of the two previous governments from 2020 to 2022.
