Why are PAS, Bersatu silent on Gerakan’s stance, asks DAP man

PETALING JAYA: Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has questioned PAS and Bersatu’s stance on Gerakan’s recent criticism of DAP after it said the party was “silent” on the government’s Islamic and Malay agendas.

“PAS and Bersatu leaders, who claim to defend the rights of the Malays and Muslims, seem to be quiet about the matter,” the DAP lawmaker said in a Facebook post.

“Do they also agree with the Gerakan deputy president’s (Oh Tong Keong) statement?”

He claimed Perikatan Nasional was practising a “divide-and-conquer” policy, with PAS and Bersatu allegedly inflaming sentiments within the Malay community and Gerakan doing the same with the Chinese community.

Syahredzan said DAP has constantly upheld the fundamental principles of the Federal Constitution, including Article 153 regarding the special position of the Malays, and the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak, and Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution regarding Islam as the religion of the federation.

He added that DAP has always been at the forefront in championing the rights and interests of other races and communities.

The controversy started when Oh accused DAP of compromising on its integrity for the sake of power in the federal government.

He reportedly said DAP would have opposed the government’s Islamic and Malay agendas if it was still in the opposition and that it does not practise what it preaches.

Oh was responding to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s dismissal of claims that DAP was against the government’s Islamic and Malay-centric policies.
