Akmal to MCA: Remember, you depend on Malay votes

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has warned MCA against undermining Malay sensitivities, pointing out that the party depended on Malay support to win its two parliamentary seats.

In a sharp response to MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng, Akmal defended his outspoken nature on issues he believed were important to the Malays, saying it was his responsibility to do so.

Tan had urged Akmal today to do some self-reflection over why non-Malays largely held him in negative regard. Tan had come to the defence of a Johor MCA leader whom Akmal threatened to sue for labelling him a “crazy horse”.

Akmal responded, saying Tan should do some pondering too. “What ethnicity makes up the majority in the two parliamentary seats that MCA won (in the 2022 general election)? I’m just reminding you in case you’ve forgotten,” he said.

MCA is represented in the Dewan Rakyat by Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong, the party president, and Tanjung Piai MP Wee Jeck Seng. Their constituencies are mixed seats, with the Malay community comprising more than half the voters there.
