Azlan threatens libel suit over media reports of ex-wife’s shariah claims

PETALING JAYA: Former Perlis menteri besar Azlan Man said he plans to sue his ex-wife, Sova Ali, and 12 media outlets for defaming him in reports about her demand for RM15 million in mutaah (consolatory gift) and alimony.

Azlan’s lawyer Azhar Ameir said Sova and the media outlets had been given 14 days to respond to a letter of demand for an apology and retraction.

Azhar said the reports had damaged his client’s reputation and dignity as the RM15 million figure suggested that Azlan had large amounts of cash, which had created a false perception of his wealth.

Azhar said this was especially harmful as the former menteri besar is currently facing corruption charges.

“The media reports have not only hurt and humiliated Azlan, but also portrayed him as a villain,” Azhar said in a statement.

“The impression deliberately created by his ex-wife has been detrimental to his dignity and liberty.”

Azhar also criticised the media for publishing the information in their reports without verifying it, accusing them of simply regurgitating content from Sova or her lawyers.

“They may have gotten it (the information) from the ex-wife or her counsel, who had the privilege to present or file her affidavit in court.

“The truth of these claims have yet to be established in court,” he said.

Azhar also said that while no legal action can be taken on any potentially defamatory statements Sova makes in court, this protection does not apply to comments made outside the courtroom.
