PETALING JAYA: Two senior Umno leaders have rubbished a claim that the majority of the party’s MPs could support the opposition’s efforts to topple the government before the next general election (GE16).

Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias said there was no reason for any Umno MP to collude with Perikatan Nasional (PN) to usurp the government.

He added that all 26 of Umno’s MPs in the Dewan Rakyat were united in ensuring political stability for the sake of national development.

“There’s no such thing as ‘original Umno’ or not. PN is the one that’s trying to cause the government to fall. Why involve other parties?

“They should just wait for GE16 when all parties can contest for the people’s mandate,” the Jelebu MP told FMT.

Yesterday, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz claimed that 17 Umno MPs, whom he labelled as “original Umno” members, could support PN’s efforts to topple the government.

However, he said this would also require the support of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), as well as independent MPs.

Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin said Faisal’s statement was merely aimed at provoking and causing confusion among the rakyat, adding that this was not beneficial for the country.

The Sabah Umno chief maintained that the current government should remain in place.

“I admit that the government has its weaknesses, but we cannot use this as an excuse to topple the government before GE16,” Bung said.

Separately, Tampin MP Isam Isa urged PN to learn from the political instability Malaysia had to endure during the last parliamentary term, where the prime minister’s post changed hands three times from 2020 to 2022.

“Let this government complete its mandated term. We can contest when the time comes for elections. That’s the gentleman’s way.”
