Let Anwar complete full term as PM, says minister
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should be allowed to serve a full five-year term to implement government initiatives aimed at benefiting the people, says a Cabinet minister.
Commenting on calls by some for a change of government outside the democratic process, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing said they were self-serving and harmful to national unity.
“Continued agitation over the issue of ‘leadership change’ at this time could destabilise the government’s momentum in attracting investors, which could, in turn, harm the national economy,” he said in a Facebook post.
While Tiong did not name specific individuals, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari yesterday demanded Anwar’s resignation over a purported addendum order allowing former prime minister Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest.
This came after the Court of Appeal granted Najib leave to begin judicial review proceedings to compel the government to execute the supplementary decree.

Tiong cited the country’s past experiences with political instability, particularly the three changes in prime minister under the previous administration.
“When political instability occurs, economic recovery is hindered, leaving the people in distress, and many families struggle with uncertainty,” he said, adding that a stable environment was necessary to attract international investors.
The Bintulu MP also said that the public would have the opportunity to evaluate the government’s performance during the next general election season.
“If Anwar fails to deliver a good performance, the people can express their dissatisfaction through the ballot box,” he said.
On matters concerning Najib, Tiong called for confidence in the pardons board and discouraged attempts to disrupt the country’s trajectory through protests or similar actions.

He said political agendas should not derail the country’s future.
“Regardless of differences, I urge all parties to come together to move past disputes through dialogue and negotiation, rather than pushing for leadership changes in haste,” he said.
Yesterday, PAS held a rally outside the Palace of Justice in support of Najib, despite Umno’s withdrawal following a statement from Istana Negara and advice from the police against public participation.
Following the Court of Appeal’s ruling, Umno said it would ask the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to grant Najib a full pardon for his conviction and prison sentence in the SRC International case.
