PETALING JAYA: The government has opened the door to negotiations with individual opposition MPs for equal allocations, after talks with Perikatan Nasional as a bloc fell through.

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said he was open to holding negotiations with individual MPs concerning the memorandum of understanding (MoU), which PN had rejected, Berita Harian reported.

“If any individual MP over there (in the opposition bloc) want to discuss (the matter), I am open to it. But as a bloc, as I have already stated, they (PN) rejected the draft MoU.

“That is their decision, I cannot do anything,” he said during his winding-up speech on the Supply Bill 2025 for his energy transition and water transformation ministry.

Fadillah said his job was to hold negotiations on the MoU, and that he could not force any party to participate.

He again said Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) was the only one who had given any feedback regarding the draft MoU.

“I am going through his feedback, and it will be discussed with the government party whips. I will discuss with Muar later on his feedback,” he added.

In September, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin said PN unanimously rejected the draft MoU, claiming it went against the Federal Constitution.

Hamzah said the draft violated the constitution by including conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras, and stipulations that allegedly “went against traditional, cultural and moral values”.

The government, however, said PN should respond and give their feedback to the drafts instead of rejecting it outright. PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin dismissed this, saying it was pointless to negotiate further with the government.

However, last month, Hamzah said he was still open to holding talks on the MoU, particularly if Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were to invite him for discussions.
