Former Masterchef finalist charged with murder of maid

KOTA KINABALU: A former Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her husband have been charged with murdering their domestic worker earlier this month.

Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulang, 33, and husband Mohammad Ambree Yunos, 40, were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence.

The charge was read in front of magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun.

However, no plea was recorded from both the accused as murder comes under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge sheet, both of them were accused of killing their domestic worker, Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, at their condominium unit at Jalan Lintas Lido between Dec 10 and Dec 13.

Ambree was represented by Ram Singh and Kimberly Yee while Etiqah was represented by Rakbir Singh.

Meanwhile, the prosecution was led by Sabah state prosecution director Irwan Suainbon and deputy public prosecutor Ali Imran.

The court ordered the couple to remain in custody and fixed Feb 10 for further mention of the case.

The couple was arrested on Dec 14, a day after they lodged a police report alleging that they discovered their domestic worker on the floor of their bathroom after returning from a holiday in Kundasang, Ranau.

They were released on police bail a week later. FMT
