Does the govt know what it is doing, asks Najib

Does the govt know what it is doing, asks Najib. Former prime minister Najib Razak has questioned whether the government knows how to manage the Covid-19 pandemic, outlining several seemingly contradictory announcements it has made.

In a Facebook post today, he listed a series of events that had led him to wonder if the government and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin know what they are doing.

Noting that “PM8 guaranteed that there would be no more nationwide movement control orders (MCOs)” on March 18 and repeated the assurance on April 15, Najib highlighted how Muhyiddin then announced the third nationwide lockdown (MCO 3.0) on May 10.

“Also, after stating that the country could not afford a total lockdown as it would lose RM2.4 billion a day on May 18, the prime minister announced a total lockdown just five days later on May 23,” Najib said.

“Other countries had lockdowns, and the case numbers went down. But in Malaysia, the more (lockdown) announcements, the longer we have to stay home and the more cases there are.”

Najib also noted that the government said on May 20 that all approval letters issued by the international trade and industry ministry (Miti) for businesses to operate during the lockdown would be cancelled, and that the ministry would no longer have the power to issue permission letters.

But on June 3, the government said Miti would once again be the agency tasked with issuing permission letters, with the ministry then announcing that approvals were given to 128,150 companies to operate as of the third day of the total lockdown.

“Then on July 1, the government announced that most of Selangor and parts of Kuala Lumpur would be under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from July 3, and only factories that are ‘really essential’ would be allowed to operate.

“Six days later, on July 7, the Cabinet allowed more sectors to operate in EMCO areas in Selangor,” Najib said.

He added that department stores like Isetan and Sogo were allowed to reopen on July 9 but the decision was reversed just two days later.

Najib also took a dig at the continued silence from Muhyiddin as the number of cases and deaths reported daily continue to hit record numbers.

“The number of active cases had risen to more than 137,000, new daily positive cases reached a record of more than 13,000, and the number of deaths recorded in a day hit a high of 199 yesterday.

“But PM8 is still silent without any change of strategy or new steps (to deal with the pandemic),” he said.
