Umany stands by statement on King, says it is defending freedom of speech

Universiti Malaya had on Sunday said it was investigating article entitled “Yang Di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs”.

PETALING JAYA: A student body is standing by a Facebook post on the King and has threatened to haul Universiti Malaya (UM) to court if the institution takes action against them for their statement.

In republishing the controversial post, the UM Association of New Youth (Umany) also slammed UM for condemning the Facebook post.

“If the university takes disciplinary action against Umany for rational academic discussions, the association does not rule out to challenge the decision through judicial approach and seek compensation from the university,” it said.

They also “reiterate the proposed stand of the statement”.

“The association insists on defending the freedom of speech and rights granted to the people by the constitution.”

On Sunday, UM said it was investigating the article entitled “Yang Di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs”.



The university said its top management condemned any statement that “violates or is contradictory” of upholding the royal institution.

However, Umany this evening said it respected the constitutional monarchy of Malaysia and claimed that their post had been “severely distorted and discredited by the media”.
