PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) is working to consolidate three separate lists of containers believed to be filled with e-waste at the ports here, in what officials describe as a crucial step before repatriation efforts begin.

Sources said the lists were provided by the Department of Environment (DoE) and Customs Department besides the MCBA’s own, each of which had identified containers suspected of containing e-waste.

Port Klang MCBA commander Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal told the New Straits Times the consolidation exercise was necessary to ensure that there was no duplication and enforcement efforts were aligned.

“This move is a necessary and important step which needs to take place before work can proceed to repatriate the containers to their ports of origin,” he said.

A total of 818 containers at the ports here were believed to be e-waste shipments.

“We will certify that these containers are in fact filled with e-waste before proceeding to the next step, which is sending them back to where they came from,” said Nik Ezanee.

He added that he would be holding another meeting with DoE officials tomorrow to coordinate the enforcement action.

Meanwhile, Nik Ezanee said a total of 45 detained containers were physically inspected at West Port at 10am yesterday.

The operation also involved the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia, the Customs Container Control Unit, Port Klang Authority and DoE.

“From the inspection, 22 containers were found to be filled with e-waste, while 18 others contained scheduled waste,” he said.

The containers were brought into the country between September 2024 and March last year.
