PETALING JAYA: Umno says it has not received an official resignation letter from Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and that the party is slighted over his intention to join PKR, says Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno secretary-general said it was not appropriate for political parties within the unity government to accept leaders from another party.

“This is to avoid disharmony among parties within the unity government, which could lead to continuous prejudice and distrust towards loyalty, sincerity and honesty among grassroots members,” said Asyraf in a statement on Friday (May 30) night.

On Friday, Tengku Zafrul had earlier stated his intention to tender his resignation as Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division leader and party member to the party’s top leadership.

“This is not an easy decision. Before making this decision, I have consulted the advice and views of my friends, from within and outside the party, as well as the party president himself.

“This decision was made after rationalising and taking into account various factors, especially regarding compatibility and suitability,” he said on social media.

Tengku Zafrul also said he would begin the application process to be a PKR member.

Tengku Zafrul quit as Selangor Umno treasurer in April 2024 and speculation has been rife that he would leave the party and join PKR.
