PETALING JAYA: Former MCA Youth secretary-general Leong Kim Soon has quit the party to join Bersatu, reportedly leading an exodus of about 100 MCA members.

In a Facebook post today, Leong, who was the political secretary to former MCA president Liow Tiong Lai, announced that he had resigned from MCA with immediate effect.

Sin Chew reported that Leong was officially announced as a member of Bersatu’s associate wing at a breaking of fast event in Bentong, Pahang, this evening.

At the event, he reportedly submitted about 100 other membership applications to Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

Hamzah immediately appointed Leong as the head of the Pahang and Bentong chapters of Bersatu’s associate wing, which caters to non-Bumiputeras.

The opposition leader expressed confidence that Leong joining Bersatu would bolster the party’s chances of snatching the Bentong parliamentary seat in the next general election (GE16).

Bentong had been represented by Liow in Parliament for four terms before DAP wrested the seat from MCA.

Liow had failed to defend his parliamentary seat in 2018, losing to Wong Tack, and also failed to regain the seat for Barisan Nasional in the 2022 general election when he lost to DAP’s Young Syefura Othman.

Separately, Bersatu associate wing chief Chong Fat Full said Leong’s decision to join the party reflected MCA’s waning relevance as a non-Malay component of BN.

“The repeated loss of MCA members to Bersatu highlights frustrations over the former’s waning efficacy, potentially accelerating calls for internal reform or coalition realignment.

“Ultimately, Bersatu’s multi-phase outreach reflects Malaysia’s shifting political landscape, where race-based parties face pressure to adapt,” he told FMT
