PETALING JAYA: Wangsa Maju PKR chief Lai Chen Heng has dismissed allegations that the division’s 2024 financial statements were manipulated, which could lead to its suspension and prevent it from holding elections next month.

Lai said that during the division’s annual general meeting on March 1, no objections were raised regarding the financial report.

He explained that after several minor concerns were raised, he consulted PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, who instructed the division to hold a special meeting on March 24 to present the financial statements in detail.

“The secretary-general had directed that a special AGM be held on March 24 to reaffirm the resolutions (passed on March 1), including a specific presentation of the disputed balance sheet, even though no actual violation occurred.

“This special meeting is a standard procedure to validate governance processes, and the party elections in April can proceed as planned,” he told FMT.

He urged members not to be misled by the issue and called on all parties, including the election candidates, to compete in a spirit of camaraderie and refrain from using underhanded tactics.

Earlier, an unnamed PKR leader had claimed that the Wangsa Maju AGM on March 1 was invalid because of alleged manipulation of information in the financial statements presented, putting the division at risk of suspension.

The leader expressed concern that the division secretary’s decision to call for a special meeting on March 24 to amend the financial report might also be invalid, as the committee was officially dissolved after March 1.

The leader also said the division’s treasurer had filed a police report, claiming that he did not sign off on the financial statements presented at the AGM.

The contest for the Wangsa Maju PKR chief’s position will see Lai being challenged by Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan and Abdullah Talip from Otai Reformis 98.
