NIBONG TEBAL: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has rebuked those who claim to be devout Muslims but engage in corrupt practices.

Without naming anyone, Anwar said it was meaningless for these people to fast during Ramadan but fail to uphold moral values in their daily lives.

“Some people fast but have no integrity at work. They don’t follow schedules, they mismanage funds, and they steal from others,” he said in a speech here.

“They keep money hidden away in safe houses, yet they never miss a day of fasting. Where is the integrity in that?”

Anwar said that Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drinks, stressing that the holy month is also meant to develop discipline, honesty and moral character.

He also said religious piety must not be used as a smokescreen for unethical behaviour, urging Muslims to uphold integrity in all aspects of life.

“If someone follows all the rules of fasting but is corrupt in their dealings, what is the point? Ramadan is supposed to teach (Muslims about) self-control and accountability, not just hunger,” he said.

“We cannot have a country where people pray and fast, but lie, cheat, and steal the rest of the time. Faith must be reflected in action.”

Earlier, he hosted a breaking of fast event at the Abu Ubaidah Ibni Al-Jarrah Mosque in Bandar Tasek Mutiara here.

He also chaired a state development meeting in George Town attended by Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, state executive council members and senior federal and state officials.

In a Facebook post, he said their discussions were focused on priority projects in Penang under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which covers infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other sectors.

Anwar also called on all ministries and agencies to work together to ensure such projects are rolled out efficiently and effectively.
