Openness, dialogue the way to address racial discord, says Zaid
PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called on the government to adopt a more open approach to addressing racial divisions, asserting that traditional methods are not working.
In a post on X, Zaid said currently the government only urges the rakyat to stop talking about racial issues, “or the police will come calling”.
“The way to lessen racial discord is to allow for openness, dialogue and a more tolerant environment from the government.
“Why not try this method instead of barring people from talking or writing about their grievances?
“We have used oppressive methods all these years — why not try something new?”

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that major celebrations such as Christmas were a cornerstone of strength and unity among Malaysians.
He said any attempt to sow seeds of discord or incite racial conflict must be avoided.
Anwar also said that Malaysia must remain steadfast and not be hindered by the agendas of a few.
Instead, he added the country must uphold universal values and principles of justice.
