PN leaders slam Guan Eng for questioning Afghan delegation visit

KUALA LUMPUR: Several Perikatan Nasional leaders have criticised Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng for questioning the education ministry’s decision to host officials from the Afghanistan government earlier this month.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man accused Lim of tarnishing the country’s image with his remarks.

Tuan Ibrahim, expressing support for education minister Fadhlina Sidek, said that the government’s initiative in sharing insights with the delegation was akin to assisting newly independent nations by sharing expertise.

“We welcome the education minister’s efforts to establish cooperation with Afghanistan in the field of education. This demonstrates our forward-looking approach and ability to offer opportunities for Afghan students,” he said during a press conference in Parliament.

Tuan Ibrahim also stressed that Afghanistan’s current administration is not a “Taliban government” as alleged, but one that has established diplomatic relations with numerous countries.

Yesterday, Lim said that the ministry’s decision to host the delegation was of great concern considering the Taliban-led government’s controversial policies on women’s education.

His remarks come after Fadhlina said her ministry received a visit from the Afghan delegation recently and that her ministry shared insights on education.

However, Lim questioned whether this issue of gender discrimination was raised during the visit. He also asked how the visit from the Afghan delegation would benefit Malaysia.

Federal territories Bersatu secretary Mahathir Rais, in a statement, questioned if Lim’s reaction to the visit was warranted.

“Couldn’t this visit represent a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to play a meaningful role in guiding Afghanistan towards positive change, particularly in terms of education and women’s rights?

“Or is Lim only seeing the risks without considering the diplomatic benefits?”

He also said countries like China, Russia and Pakistan have used dialogue and cooperation to steer Afghanistan towards rebuilding and stability.

“Malaysia, as a respected Islamic nation, can offer similar support while emphasising principles of inclusivity, human rights, and education,” he added.
