Zahid supports Hajiji’s call for probe into Sabah corruption scandal

ABU DHABI – Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has voiced strong support for Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor’s decision to allow the authorities to investigate claims of corruption involving state assembly members.

Zahid said that he had reviewed media reports about the recorded conversation and commended Hajiji’s stance, suggesting it as a model for other party leaders to follow.

“As we know, the Sabah State Election will take place before its term ends in Oct 2025, and we must anticipate what might happen depending on the results of the ongoing investigation by the authorities,” he said during a press conference here on Friday.

The controversy erupted earlier this week when Sindumin state assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate claims implicating him in the alleged scandal.

Yusof, who also serves as the Qhazanah Sabah Berhad chairman dismissed the accusations, suggesting that his voice in a circulated recording had been manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The allegations prompted Hajiji to demand a broader investigation, urging the authorities to also scrutinise the bribe-givers, whom he accused of having malicious motives to extract benefits from the government.

Zahid echoed this sentiment, urging all parties to brace for the investigation’s findings.

“Today, the tabling of Sabah’s state budget is taking place, and I hope this investigation does not disrupt the debate session or the upcoming Sabah state election,” he added.
