PETALING JAYA: A government MP has urged Putrajaya to set up a special education fund for Indian students seeking tertiary education, with an allocation of RM100 million.

Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) said the aid given to the community under the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) and the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun) should continue, but “we need a game-changer” to truly help them.

“Under this proposed fund, students from low-income families should receive a one-off aid of RM20,000 to cover their education expenses.

“(A sum of) RM100 million could be allocated to support about 5,000 Indian students,” he told the Dewan Rakyat while debating the Supply Bill 2025 today.

Syahredzan said many Indian students gain admission to universities and other higher education institutions, but face significant financial challenges.because they come from lower-income families.

“If they attend private institutions, their families’ income is often drained to cover tuition fees,” he said.

He stressed that helping the Indian community does not mean neglecting the others.

“However, we must acknowledge that the Indian community is often disproportionately disadvantaged in many areas, including education and employment,” he said.

‘Support local game developers’

Syahredzan urged the government to support local game developers beyond just financial aid by helping to promote completed games.

“Finishing (the development of) a game is not the end goal, these games must also be marketed to gain traction. Here, the government can play a role by showcasing locally developed games as examples of the talent of our developers.

“One of the reasons Japan has left a significant cultural footprint worldwide is because their video games, such as Mario, Street Fighter, and Yakuza: Like A Dragon are developed locally and marketed globally,” he said.

He also called on the government to facilitate partnerships between game developers and data centres based in Malaysia to offer reduced subscription rates for cloud storage services.

Separately, Syahredzan urged the government to consider allocating about 7,000 buses to improve the public transport network within the Klang Valley.
