Batu Kawan Bersatu chief Aziss Zainal Abiddin is one of the six candidates vying for the three vice-president spots in the party elections.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu vice-president hopeful Aziss Zainal Abiddin is optimistic about his chances at next month’s party elections despite not having the same experience as his competitors.

The Batu Kawan Bersatu chief is one of the six candidates vying for the three vice-president spots. He will be up against deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, vice-presidents Ronald Kiandee and Radzi Jidin, information chief Razali Idris, and Selangor deputy chief Rafiq Abdullah

Aziss acknowledges that competing against well-known figures, some of whom have previously served as ministers and menteri besar, might diminish his chances.

“However, I leave it to the delegates to decide,” he told FMT.

He denied claims about disobedience after failing to abide by a purported order by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin for members not to contest the three vice-president’s posts.

“I am qualified to contest (according to the constitution and requirements),” he said, insisting he will remain in Bersatu even if he loses the election.

In July, Muhyiddin was reported to have said that he had been given a mandate by the Supreme Council to negotiate with the leadership to ensure the party elections did not cause divisions.

Muhyiddin’s formula entailed himself being at the helm of Bersatu, with Hamzah Zainudin as his new deputy, and Kiandee, Radzi and Faizal proposed to fill the three vice-presidents’ posts.

After nominations were finalised last week, both Muhyiddin and Hamzah won uncontested. However, six candidates were named to contest the three vice-presidents’ posts.

Rafiq yesterday denied that Muhyiddin had ordered members not to contest for the three vice-presidents’ posts. He told FMT that Muhyiddin only said he had “no issue” working with Kiandee and Radzi, and that he was “protecting” Faizal.
