PETALING JAYA: Former DAP MP Lee Lam Thye has been awarded a special seniors award at the national senior citizens day celebrations today.

The ex-Bukit Bintang MP expressed gratitude for the award, which he said was recognition of his campaigns over 50 years for workers’ rights, fighting corruption and promoting crime prevention, among others.

Lee, 78, said the award was meaningful to him as it was recognition of the contributions that elderly folk have made to Malaysia, Bernama reported. “I believe that the elderly who are still healthy can continue to contribute to society,” said Lee, a former chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

The social activist added that it was timely that a Senior Citizens Bill was in the works to safeguard the wellbeing and rights of the elderly.

At the celebrations, the deputy minister for women, family and community development, Noraini Ahmad, launched the eWarga Emas portal aimed at improving government services for the elderly.
