NGO leader says petition handover at Istana Negara not a gathering

The leader of a group of Umno supporters who submitted a petition to Istana Negara yesterday said it was never intended to be a gathering.

“I did not hold a gathering. A lot of people just came,” said Pertubuhan Jalinan Perpaduan Negara president Syed Mohammad Imran Syed Abdul Aziz to reporters in the Kuala Lumpur High Court building today.

Yesterday, Syed Mohammad and a number of Umno supporters gathered in front of Entrance 3 of Istana Negara to hand over a petition that called for a royal pardon to be granted to former prime minister Najib Razak who was serving his jail sentence in the Kajang Prison.

He had also demanded that prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob seek a royal pardon. Syed Mohammad was reported as saying that he would bring in a larger crowd in front of the palace if Ismail did not heed the group’s call.

Clarifying yesterday’s statement that he would bring in a bigger crowd next time, Syed Mohammad said he did not mean he’d organise a bigger crowd in front of the palace but that it would be in “other programmes”.

He said: “The momentum to seek a royal pardon for Najib will never stop. We will not give up because he is a good leader.”

Syed Mohammad also said that he had given a statement to the Brickfields police about the gathering and that he had written a letter to the Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani a day before the petition was handed over.

Earlier today, Brickfields police said they were looking for the organiser of yesterday’s gathering as the organiser had not made any application to hold the gathering. FMT
