KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Malaysian waters following a moderate earthquake in the Tanimbar Islands region of Indonesia.

In a Facebook post this morning, the agency said the quake occurred at 5.20am today.

“A moderate earthquake occurred in the Tanimbar Islands region, Indonesia, at 5.20am on Feb 7. There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” it said.

MetMalaysia added that the earthquake was centred at coordinates 8.1 degrees South and 130.1 degrees East.

The 5.6 magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 81km.
