Hajiji announces dissolution of Sabah state assembly, paving way for 17th state election

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 6 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor today officially announced the dissolution of the 16th State Legislative Assembly.

“Everyone has been waiting for this announcement, including all members of the media here.

“The five-year term is about to end. I met Tun Musa Aman this morning to advise on the dissolution, which takes effect today.

“The dissolution will pave the way for the democratic process of the 17th state election,” he said, referring to the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman.

He said that over the past five years since September 2020, his administration had implemented the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, guided by three key pillars — agriculture, industry and tourism.

Hajiji said that as the current government term comes to an end, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition would seek a renewed mandate to continue its development agenda.

“Our work is far from over. New challenges demand bold solutions, and we are ready to lead Sabah into its next chapter,” he said.

Hajiji’s tenure faced a power shift in January 2023 when former partners from Barisan Nasional (BN) nearly toppled his administration by withdrawing their support.

With the backing of several BN assemblymen who chose to remain with him, and the support of Pakatan Harapan at the time, Hajiji managed to retain a majority and stay in power.

An eight-term assemblyman since 1990, Hajiji is Sabah’s longest-serving state representative and has said on several occasions that the upcoming election — yet to be announced — will be his last.
