MACC nabs 5 civil servants over bribes from e-waste factories

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested five civil servants for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes to not take enforcement action against factories illegally processing e-waste.
Their arrests come after 18 people were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of bribing civil servants to secure approval for foreigners to become shareholders in e-waste factories in Selangor and Johor, according to a report by The Star.
Magistrate Nur Affiqah Radhiah Zainurin issued the order to remand the suspects for six days until March 4 after MACC made the remand applications at the Ayer Keroh magistrates’ court in Melaka this morning.
According to a source, the men, aged in their 20s to 40s, were arrested between 7pm and 9pm yesterday at the Melaka MACC office after giving their statements.
“An initial investigation found that some of the civil servants received one-off bribes ranging from RM1,000 to RM20,000 for not taking enforcement action against the e-waste factories.
