Political stability paramount, Amirudin says amid Tengku Zafrul poser

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari has called for the prioritisation of political stability in the unity government, following the revelation that Umno Supreme Council member Tengku Zafrul Aziz might join the Pakatan Harapan (PH) component.

While Tengku Zafrul has yet to submit an official application for the move, Amirudin said a “friendly discussion” must be held with PKR’s unity government allies if the Kota Raja Umno chief does apply.

“That is important, so as to ensure we remain strong and maintain our political stability, which has been proven crucial to (the government’s) success in wooing investors and other policies,” he said, according to Berita Harian.

The Selangor PH chairman also said he was in the dark over who Tengku Zafrul had met to discuss the possibility of joining PKR.

On Friday, sources told FMT that intense negotiations were under way over the possibility of Tengku Zafrul leaving Umno for PKR.

PKR president and prime minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that preliminary discussions had been held on the matter, but said it was not PKR’s culture to “invite people” to join the party.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi meanwhile criticised “those who put personal interests ahead of party loyalty”, while secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh warned against party-hopping among unity government components.

Akmal also said Umno should reassess its alliance with PKR in the unity government if the party accepts Tengku Zafrul.

Tengku Zafrul, the investment, trade and industry minister, confirmed having discussions with PKR but said he had yet to decide on the matter.

He also denied that the discussions had centred on positions at the state level or by-elections, following speculation that a move to PKR would see him becoming menteri besar of Selangor.
