KAJANG: The Road Transport Department (RTD) recorded 6,688 offences during Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 in Selangor, with traffic light violations emerging as the most common.

Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan said the operation, conducted from March 13 to 29, was aimed at ensuring road safety throughout the festive period.

“A total of 6,688 offences involving 1,789 vehicles were recorded following inspections of 45,140 vehicles statewide,” he said when met during a special RTD motorcycle operation at the Sungai Ramal toll plaza last night.

Azrin said running red lights topped the list of offences, followed by the use of mobile phones while driving.

“Many motorists claimed they were in a hurry or did not realise the traffic light had turned red, yet still accelerated to beat the light,” he said.

Azrin said enforcement was also carried out through surveillance and undercover operations.

“In some cases, monitoring is conducted discreetly, but when officers are physically present and witness offences such as crossing double lines, running red lights or using mobile phones, action is taken immediately,” he said.

On compliance with the temporary ban on goods vehicles, Azrin said adherence had improved significantly.

“During the four-day restriction period, only nine vehicles were found to have breached the rules.

“Although many lorries were seen on the roads, inspections confirmed that these belonged to permitted categories, including those transporting essential goods such as food, petroleum and agricultural products, as well as container lorries moving cargo from industrial areas to ports,” he said.

He added that empty lorries were also allowed to operate between 8am and 8pm.

Touching on undercover operations on express buses, Azrin said most drivers complied with regulations.

“Based on our observations, bus drivers are aware that JPJ officers may be on board in plain clothes, and this has contributed to improved compliance with safety requirements,” he said.

Separately, Azrin said 712 vehicles were inspected during the special motorcycle operation at the Sungai Ramal toll plaza, with action taken against 194.

“A total of 377 notices were issued, comprising 354 summonses, eight prohibition notices, eight vehicle inspection notices and seven vehicle detention notices.”

The operation, which began at 8pm and involved 40 enforcement personnel, recorded 349 offences by motorcyclists.

Among the offences detected were driving without a valid licence (104 cases), expired road tax (90), no insurance coverage (90), registration number offences (15), technical offences (eight) and other offences (42).
