KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry will propose a Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) scheme to the cabinet to protect more than 400,000 Malaysians commuting to Singapore for work.

Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the “Skim Kembara” initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen social protection, which includes a study in its final stages to extend coverage to women in confinement.

“This is our ministry’s commitment to strengthening the country’s workforce, in line with the Madani government’s aspirations led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said in a statement.

Marking his 100th day in office, Ramanan said he is focused on ensuring policies improve lives through social protection, skills development, and worker welfare.

Key initiatives include the Skim Lindung 24/7 for Perkeso contributors, which is expected to benefit nearly 10 million formal workers nationwide by providing around-the-clock protection.

The ministry is also offering free occupational safety and health training to 10,000 industry workers in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

To bolster welfare for former security personnel, Perkeso has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Armed Forces Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat) and the Veterans Affairs Department.

Ramanan said the collaboration aims to secure job placements for 5,000 veterans through the MyFutureJobs Wira Career Protection Programme by 2030.

The ministry is also focusing on talent development through upskilling and reskilling under the Labour Department via the Centre for Advanced Technology, which is expected to benefit 90,000 people.

“These initiatives are vital to ensure the national workforce remains relevant. Our goal is not just to provide job opportunities, but to ensure our veterans earn a dignified income commensurate with their expertise and high discipline,” he said.

During his first 100 days, Ramanan also launched the Vetri Madani 2026 Skills Programme, a high-impact initiative to empower the Indian community through technical, artificial intelligence, and engineering training alongside job placements.
